Candidate for Secretary

A. Elisabeth Abramowicz, MD, FASA
Westchester Medical Center

I am running for the position of Secretary of the AACPD Council and I am asking for your vote!

I am running because, as an experienced PD of a medium-size program in an under-resourced, rapidly growing, mixed suburban and rural university practice, I have come to rely on the AACPD to help me find solutions for all that happens in a program every year, even the unexpected.

And in the process, I have connected with many of you and developed a network of advisors and friends willing to offer support, perspective and a diversity of often very helpful views.

Every year, I have been advising over 20 medical students applying to Anesthesiology, and I believe PDs are uniquely qualified as specialty advisors, especially in the current, turbulent climate of massive changes in the application process and perhaps even the Match.

My interest is in contributing to the timely flow of information to and from the AACPD. I have now served on the Council for one year, and I have the energy, experience and interest to expand my responsibilities to the Council and the PDs it serves. I hope you’ll give me the opportunity.

Candidate for Secretary

Rena Beckerly MD, MBA
University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System

The SAAAPM organization has been an invaluable resource throughout my academic journey, from my initial attendance as an Associate Program Director to later becoming a Program Director and, most recently, serving as the Associate Head for Education. Each year, the conference has consistently provided well-organized, insightful, and inspiring content, motivating me to implement innovative ideas in my work. I've also had the privilege of forming meaningful connections with colleagues and mentors within this community, and now, I'm eager to give back.

In my current role as the Associate Head for Education at the University of Illinois-Chicago, I oversee the entire educational curriculum, collaborating closely with faculty and residents. My experience in organizing the SEA National Meeting in November 2021 has equipped me with valuable insights into educational event management. Over the next two years, I'm excited to contribute as SAAAPM Secretary, ensuring timely communication of events and updates relevant to academic anesthesiologists. My goal is to maintain our community's strong sense of connection and provide a reliable resource for all members, thereby advancing the field of academic anesthesiology.

Candidate for Secretary

Jack Buckley MD, FASA
UCLA Medical Center

I have been involved in residency leadership for the last 10 years including 7 years as an APD and then the last 3 years as the Core Residency Program Director at UCLA Medical Center. We are one of the larger residency programs with 27 residents per class including our interns. I have participated in every annual meeting of the SAAAPM in the last 10 years and I have found this organization to be the most valuable resource for those of us in residency leadership positions. I would like to elected to be the Secretary for SAAAPM to help continue to strengthen the organization and be a resource for my fellow program directors.

I currently serve as the Chair of the ASA Program Director Advisory group in addition to being a member of the Committee on Residents and Medical Students for the ASA. I serve as a member of the Trainee Engagement Committee for the Society of Neurosurgical Anesthesia and Critical Care (SNACC) and as an Education Committee member for Society of Head and Neck Anesthesia (SHANA). I have been an ABA Oral Board Examiner for the last 7 years and as a group leader for the ABA OSCE Exam Writing Committee. I have been invited to give lectures at SAAAPM, SEA and ASA national meetings on topics relevant to those of us in residency leadership positions. My hope is these various experiences will allow me to become a valuable member of the SAAAPM leadership and I would appreciate your support in being elected to this important position.

Candidate for Secretary

Michael C. Hawryschuk, MD, FASA
University of Cincinnati

My name is Michael Hawryschuk, and I am an Associate Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology and the core anesthesiology residency program director at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. While I am new to the role of residency program director (transitioned into the role effective 7/1/22), I have been involved in our residency program leadership since 2012 as an APD. I have attended the SAAAPM annual meetings for the past several years and have learned so much from the provided educational content and program directors from across the country. Much of what I learned at SAAAPM, I further researched and employed to enhance the residency training experience at my home training institution.

I am an educator at heart and also believe in life-long learning. Having served as a former president of the Ohio Society of Anesthesiologists, I am thankful for all the experiences that I gained while working my way up from CEAM (Committee on Education for the Annual Meeting) Chair and through the executive board from the role of assistant secretary treasurer all the way up to the role of president of the OSA. It was through the various roles and ranks that I learned more about the organization over time, bottom up, making my time as president all the more impactful. The reason that I am running for secretary of SAAAPM is to learn more about the organization so that I can be the best version of a residency program director for my residency training program and also to more effectively support the ongoing mission of SAAAPM and serve the community of program directors across the country. Thank you for the opportunity to submit my name for candidacy.

Candidate for Secretary

Susan Martinelli, MD, FASA
University of North Carolina

I am a Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of North Carolina. I was an APD for 11 years prior to moving into the role of Residency Program Director almost 3 years ago. As a member of the ACGME Anesthesiology Review Committee and the Chair of the Educational Advisory Board for the Association of University Anesthesiologists, I believe that it is important for the major anesthesia organizations to collaborate on educational initiatives. I have been serving as an AACPD Council Member since Nov 2021 and would love the opportunity to transition to the role of secretary for this organization. The AACPD is doing great work to advocate for our residents and our program leaders, and I would be honored to continue to contribute to these efforts.

My career has centered on being a clinician-educator with a focus on research in education. My research interests include innovative approaches to graduate medical education, such as the flipped classroom, and the development of programs that utilize family and friends to improve the well-being of healthcare providers, including medical students, residents, and attending physicians.
